NHL Alumni Play in Match Benefiting Youth Hockey

June 12, 2021
SNOQUALMIE, WA — Hockey games are a regular thing at Sno-King Ice Arenas. But this wasn’t your average match and these weren’t your average Joes.

The “Pros vs. Joes NHL Alumni Game” had teams face off in a friendly competitive match that helped raise $15,000 for Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association and the Seattle NHL Alumni Association. The event was hosted by Sno-King in partnership with the 7 th Man. All proceeds will go towards assisting youth hockey families in need of financial support aligning with the 7th Man’s mission to provide accessible hockey programs to local communities.

The Pros team was comprised of 14 NHL Alumni including Jamie Huscroft, Tanner Glass, Steve Konowalchuck, Jim McTaggart, and Brad Smith. The Joes team, named The 7 th Man, after their sponsor, originally had 16 spots available but quickly sold out and raised the roster to 20 players.

“Our first official NHL Alumni skate was a huge success and left everyone asking when can we do this again? I am so thankful for all the Pros and Joes who helped to make this a great event,” says Huscroft.

The match was played in front of a crowd of about 60 attendees, lucky enough to experience the skills showcased on the ice and even catch snippets of old-time hockey stories that very few get the chance to hear.

The Pros team called themselves the Seattle Metropolitans, a nod to the professional ice hockey team, that won the Stanley Cup in 1917, making Seattle the first American team to win the Cup.

The event echoes the excitement for the sport, only gaining popularity with the Seattle Kraken, NHL’s 32nd franchise team, dropping the puck next season.

In addition to an entertaining hockey game, Steve “Migs” Migliore, from 99.9 KISW hosted the Hot Stove Lounge. Legendary coach and scout Tom McVie capped off the night with a comedy act.

For those keeping score, the Seattle Metropolitans ended up winning the game in shootouts.
